The tourism industry across South Asia is largely supported by the efforts of home-based workers. However, even today, these workers have limited opportunities to expand, scale and drive meaningful financial growth through their work. HomeNet South Asia’s affiliate partner, the Institute for Development of Community Strengths (INDECOS), sought to change this in Sri Lanka.
Serving possibilities within hospitality
Continuing their efforts in Matara, INDECOS conducted an extensive 3-day training program for home-based workers in the tourism industry.
The program created valuable skill development opportunities for 30 women workers operating in home-stays, restaurants and tourism services, as well as those who work to produce sweets, garments, and ornamental and coconut-based products. The training enabled participants to learn crucial skills to improve their products and services, helping them strengthen their service offerings within the sector.
Supporting their newfound theoretical knowledge, participants also had a chance to gain broader market perspectives with exposure visits. They explored model hotels, getting first-hand experience of the real-world intricacies and opportunities within the hospitality industry.
Room for advancement: The way ahead
The sessions paved the way for meaningful skill development, enabling home-based workers operating within the tourism sector to expand their impact – and experience better livelihoods as a result.
