Finally, after a process of learning about and engaging with the work carried out by the members of the Union of Women Workers in Various Trades and Sexual Diversity (SITRAOVDISE), on June 13, 2025, COTRADO ALAC responded favorably to the request for affiliation submitted in December 2024.
SITRAOVDISE is a union made up of workers—mainly trans people—who engage in a wide range of trades and jobs, from creating crafts and handmade goods at home to working as domestic workers. As a union, they also address issues of discrimination and violence affecting the local LGBT population.
The incorporation of SITRAOVDISE into COTRADO ALAC is inspired by the organization’s founding goals, which today take shape through a strategic development plan for the region. This plan aims to increase levels of advocacy in public policies in the region’s states, as well as within local trade unions, with the objective of achieving greater recognition of the struggles faced by this sector and the importance of its role within the labor movement.
Without a doubt, the incorporation of SITRAOVDISE reaffirms the purpose and convictions of COTRADO ALAC: those of us who carry out our work in conditions of economic and social insecurity are engaged in a complex struggle shaped by diverse social, cultural, and identity-based factors. This alone is reason enough to demand economic and structural changes to ensure the full recognition and liberation of invisible, unregulated, and exploited labor.
Welcome sisters of SITRAOVDISE!
SITRAOVDISE met with the Federation of Free Trade Zone Maquilas to learn about the achievements and progress made by maquila unions in addressing discrimination, stigma, and human rights violations suffered by the LGBTQ+ community as workers.
