HomeNet International stands in solidarity with our affiliates, sisters and brothers following the devastating floods that have struck communities across Nepal, taking lives, leaving people missing, displacing communities, and causing widespread destruction to homes and livelihoods.
Our thoughts are with all those who have lost loved ones and everyone affected by this disaster. This disaster also comes amid the growing impacts of the climate crisis, which is increasing the risks faced by communities across the world. We are all vulnerable to climate-related disasters, however the most impacted are the ones who are invisible and unrecognized – the informal home-based workers, as their homes are often also their workplaces and the loss of a home can mean the simultaneous loss of tools, materials, income and livelihoods.
The devastation in Nepal is another urgent reminder that workers who contribute the least to the climate crisis are often among those who bear its greatest consequences. Recovery and climate resilience efforts must ensure that informal and home-based workers and their organizations are heard, included and supported.
We extend our deepest condolences to those who have lost loved ones in Nepal and our solidarity to our affiliates, and all communities facing the difficult task of recovery and rebuilding.
